Voices of the Rangelands: Stories from the Gascoyne and beyond

Improve social connection and collaboration for preparedness for drought in the Gascoyne community through a digital storytelling project that records oral histories of drought experiences, produces a targeted podcast series and supporting materials, and engages young people through hands‑on media training that builds intergenerational capability.
Building on the success of the Voices of the Gascoyne podcast series, Gascoyne Pilbara Rangelands Initiative (GPRI) is seeking support to expand this project and capture more of the stories, knowledge and experiences that have shaped life across our rangeland communities.
The proposed Voices of the Rangelands project will record and share the lived experiences of pastoralists, station workers, community elders, former residents and others who have contributed to the history and resilience of the Gascoyne and Pilbara. Through a series of professionally produced podcast episodes, these stories will be preserved for future generations while creating opportunities for learning, connection and reflection.
The project will also build local capacity by mentoring one or two community members in podcast recording, editing and production. This will help develop valuable skills within the region and support ongoing community storytelling beyond the life of the project.
Stories will explore topics such as life on remote stations, drought and climate variability, community connections, innovation, resilience and the changes that have shaped our rangelands over time. Episodes will be published across major podcast platforms and hosted on the GPRI website, ensuring they are accessible to listeners wherever they are.
Since launching in 2023, the original Voices of the Gascoyne series has attracted more than 2,000 downloads and plays across podcast platforms, with hundreds of visits to the dedicated webpage and strong engagement across social media channels. This response highlights the value of sharing authentic local stories and preserving the knowledge held within our communities.
As the project develops, there will be opportunities for community members to suggest interviewees, share ideas and participate in engagement activities linked to the podcast series.
