About
Gascoyne Pilbara Rangelands Initiative Inc. (formerly Gascoyne Catchments Group Inc.) was established in 2009 by local pastoralists who recognised the need for a coordinated, community-driven approach to rangeland management across the Gascoyne. Built on producer leadership and regional knowledge, the group set out to strengthen land management, support business resilience and build constructive relationships between pastoralists, researchers and government.

In the early years, the group focused strongly on understanding landscape condition and improving regional monitoring efforts, drawing on the best available science and local experience. This period laid the groundwork for the practical, evidence-based approach that continues to shape the organisation’s work.

Over time, the organisation broadened its project base to meet emerging needs across the region. Key areas of work have included drought preparedness, data management, biodiversity monitoring, business resilience, capacity building and on-ground rehydration projects. Throughout this growth, partnerships strengthened with research organisations, government agencies, funding bodies and industry groups, reflecting the trust placed in a locally driven and highly practical approach.
As the footprint of the organisation continued to expand, so did the contribution of Pilbara members, whose involvement helped steer the organisation’s direction and highlighted the need for a name that better reflected the full region it served.

By 2025, it was clear that “Gascoyne Catchments Group” no longer captured the scale or ambition of the work being delivered. Members endorsed the new name in August 2025, and government approval was received on 13 November 2025 at our Annual Forum. The transition to Gascoyne Pilbara Rangelands Initiative Inc. reflects both our history and our broader role in supporting resilient rangelands and strong pastoral businesses across the Gascoyne and Pilbara.

Today, GPRI continues to lead practical, on-ground projects, support informed decision-making and foster a vibrant pastoral community. The organisation remains grounded in its origins: producer-led, regionally informed and committed to a sustainable, profitable future for the rangelands.
